Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen tied for speaking time during the between-two-rounds on YouTube and Twitch

An average of five million viewers watched the results of the presidential election on France 2 on April 24. The same evening, however, nearly 500,000 people preferred the election night of the program “Mashup”, broadcast live on Twitch. On web video broadcasting platforms, such as Twitch or YouTube, broadcasts devoted to the presidential election were particularly numerous and watched in 2022. However, unlike traditional audiovisual, the speaking time of the candidates does not is not counted.

Thanks to a semi-automated tool called “Timer”, The world counts, since the 1is January, the speaking time and the audience of presidential candidates on these two platforms – to find out more, you can consult our methodology. On April 10, the evening of the first round, this count revealed unfair media treatment between the twelve qualified candidates. But what about the two finalists in the between-two-rounds?

Between April 10 and 24, Marine Le Pen accumulated six hours and twenty-eight minutes of speech, twenty-eight minutes more than Emmanuel Macron. The major meetings broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Figaro represent nearly a quarter of the overall speaking time of each candidate over the period: one hour and twenty-three minutes for Emmanuel Macron and one hour and thirty minutes for Marine Le Pen. Nineteen percent of Emmanuel Macron’s speaking time also comes from interviews that the candidate gave during the between-two rounds, in particular to the YouTube channels of Booska-P, Konbini and Magali Berdah. Marine Le Pen saves 10% of her speaking time with a single interview, the one given to Guillaume Pley’s YouTube channel.

Between 1is January and April 24, the two finalists of the presidential campaign are however far from being the most present. They respectively record sixteen hours and fifty-eight minutes of speaking time (Emmanuel Macron) and fourteen hours and seven minutes (Marine Le Pen). Either less than Jean-Luc Mélenchon (twenty-three hours and twenty minutes) or Eric Zemmour (twenty hours and fifty minutes), candidates most present on these platforms during the campaign.

The two finalists achieve almost the same number of views thanks to their speeches and those of their supporters: 3.889 million for Emmanuel Macron, against 3.881 million for Marine Le Pen. This recorded 39% of its views over the period thanks to the interview given to Guillaume Pley. The youtubeur only gave the floor to three candidates during this campaign: Eric Zemmour (1.4 million views), Anne Hidalgo (145,000 views) and Marine Le Pen (1.2 million views).
