A groundbreaking new tournament, the European Cup of Nations, is set to redefine international ice hockey, replacing traditional friendly matches with a competitive framework for 18 European nations starting this November.
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) announced the tournament on Thursday as a key component of its strategic plan, “ICE26,” signaling a major shift away from inconsequential exhibition games. The initiative aims to provide consistent, meaningful competition during international breaks, addressing long-standing concerns from member associations.
“For years, our member associations have been calling for a framework that gives constancy and a purpose for international break breaks,” a senior IIHF official stated.
Austria Faces Tough Draw in Group 1
The Austrian national team will face a challenging test in the inaugural tournament, landing in “Group 1” alongside established hockey powerhouses Germany, Slovakia, and Latvia – all nations with extensive World Cup experience. This represents a significant upgrade in competition for Austria, moving away from sporadic international matches towards regular engagements with Europe’s elite.
The tournament will unfold in stages, with games scheduled throughout November, December, and February. All matches will be available for global viewing on IIHF TV Transfer, expanding the reach of international hockey to a wider audience.

The group layout is determined by current world rankings, with Austria’s group joined by a second tier featuring Denmark, Norway, France, Slovenia, and Great Britain. Notably, Switzerland will not participate in the tournament’s first iteration.
