Jacob Elordi‘s Transformative Performance in Del Toro’s “Frankenstein” Required 10-Hour Makeup Process
A remarkable commitment to the role of the Creature saw actor Jacob Elordi undergo a grueling 10-hour daily transformation involving 42 prosthetic pieces for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming adaptation of “Frankenstein.”
The highly anticipated film, premiering October 6th in Los Angeles, demanded an remarkable physical and emotional investment from Elordi, as revealed by del Toro during an exclusive interview wiht E! News’ Francesca Amiker. The director emphasized the dedication required to embody the iconic character.
“He took around 10 hours every day,” del Toro stated, “and about 42 pieces of makeup, prosthetics. and then he would have to work.” Despite the demanding process, del Toro was deeply impressed by Elordi’s grace and patience. “He did it all with grace and patience and love,” the Oscar winner added.
Del Toro likened the extensive makeup application to a sacred ritual, explaining, “I told him, ‘Look, it’s like when a priest is getting dressed, ther are many layers to the robes and the ceremonial guard. You have to think, this is your Ceremonial Guard. You’re invoking the Creature.'” He believes the result is a profoundly moving performance. “and the result is heartbreaking and beautiful. It’s a really naked performance – emotionally so close to innocence that it breaks your heart.”
Beyond Prosthetics: A Holistic Approach to the Role
The physical transformation was onyl one facet of Elordi’s planning. The actor immersed himself in a variety of disciplines to fully inhabit the role, including Japanese butoh dance and a deep study of the Book of Job. This dedication did not go unnoticed by his co-star, Oscar Isaac, who portrays Dr. Victor Frankenstein.
“He’s so put together,” Isaac shared with E!. “He was so effortless. He never complained. He was in 10 hours of makeup every day.” Isaac was especially struck by elordi’s vulnerability and openness on set. “The fact that he would just show up and was so beautiful and vulnerable and open, I was so impressed with him.”
Elordi, who also stars alongside Mia Goth, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz, stepped into the role after Andrew Garfield had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts. Del Toro previously described Elordi as the “perfect actor” for the Creature, citing a unique and intuitive connection. “We have a supernaturally good connection,” the director told Vanity Fair in July. “It’s like, very few words.Very few things I have to say, and he does it.”
Navigating a Legacy of Performances
The role of Frankenstein’s Creature has been portrayed by numerous celebrated actors, including Boris Karloff, Robert De Niro, and Benedict cumberbatch.Initially, Elordi hesitated to draw inspiration from these iconic performances.
“At first I thought, ‘I’ll stay away from this. I want to do my own thing,'” he confessed. Though, after seeking del Toro’s guidance, he embraced the opportunity to study his predecessors. “And then I asked Guillermo, ‘Should I watch the other frankensteins?’ And he goes, ‘What the f— do you mean?'”
Del Toro reassured Elordi that his interpretation would be uniquely his own, famously stating, “He says, ‘My friend, it’s a movie, it can’t f—– hurt you.'” elordi then “went home, and I just binged them.”
“Frankenstein” will arrive in select theaters on October 17th,followed by its availability on netflix beginning November 7th.
