Minnesota Poultry Farms Deploy Lasers in Fight Against Avian Influenza

Minnesota poultry producers are turning to innovative, adn costly, methods to combat the ongoing threat of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Some farms have begun installing bird-deterring lasers – technology previously utilized at airports – at an approximate cost of $40,000 per barn, signaling a proactive shift in disease prevention strategies.
Proactive Prevention Over Reactive Response
The move towards preventative measures reflects a growing frustration within the industry. “We’d rather prevent the disease than respond to it,” a senior official stated, highlighting the economic and logistical burdens associated wiht outbreaks. the current “gold standard” for managing HPAI, according to Shauna Voss, assistant director at Minnesota’s Board of Animal Health, remains the complete depopulation of infected farms, even if the virus is isolated to a single barn. This is followed by a mandatory quarantine period before new birds can be reintroduced.
The initial outbreaks in 2022 led to the culling of over 2.6 million birds in Minnesota alone, causing notable economic disruption for farmers and impacting egg and poultry prices nationwide.The depopulation process involves euthanizing all birds on an infected premises, followed by careful disposal of carcasses and thorough disinfection of facilities. This is a costly and emotionally taxing process for producers.
High-Risk Period Continues
Despite these efforts, Minnesota’s poultry flocks remain at elevated risk. Voss indicated that the industry anticipates a continued high-risk period until the arrival of consistent snowfall, suggesting that colder temperatures may play a role in reducing viral transmission. The virus survives longer in warmer, humid conditions, making spring and fall migration seasons particularly hazardous.
The lasers work by emitting luminous, moving beams of light that deter birds from entering barns, reducing the likelihood of contact with infected wild birds. While the technology has shown promise in initial trials, its long-term effectiveness and cost-benefit ratio are still being evaluated. Farms are also exploring othre preventative measures, including enhanced ventilation systems and improved sanitation protocols.
The Search for a Long-Term Solution
The industry is actively seeking a more definitive solution to the HPAI challenge.Sherman miller,CEO of Cal-maine foods – the nation’s largest egg company – expressed the need for a breakthrough during an investor call on October 1st. “The silver bullet of ‘Here’s the problem, here’s how to solve it’ is still out there. We’ve got to find it,” Miller said, underscoring the urgency and complexity of the situation. The ample investment in technologies like laser deterrents demonstrates a commitment to finding effective strategies while a thorough solution remains elusive.
As of November 2023, there is no definitive end in sight to the HPAI threat. While the deployment of lasers and enhanced biosecurity measures offer some protection, the virus continues to circulate in wild bird populations. Researchers are working on developing more effective vaccines and antiviral treatments, but a widespread, long-term solution remains a significant challenge for the poultry industry.
