A second case of the new form of acute hepatitis in children has been registered. That confirms virologist Steven Van Gucht of Sciensano on VRT News.
It concerns a young teenager who has been in hospital because of an acute liver infection, but has now returned home.
There would be no connection with the first infection discovered in Belgium. Both children are said to be infected with the adenovirus, which normally leads to colds or stomach or intestinal infections and occurs regularly in children.
The cause of the new form of hepatitis is still unknown. There are about two hundred known cases worldwide, so a second infection has now been counted in Belgium. Five other children are still being investigated whether they have become infected with the new form of hepatitis.
