Croatian Couple Fined After Altercation with Police

A Croatian couple residing in Gustirna, near Marina, has been issued a combined fine of €200 following an incident involving a police officer and a family member. The 66-year-old man and his 63-year-old wife were initially held in custody for two days in late August after a confrontation escalated at their home on Gustirna II street.
Initial Police Visit and Verbal Dispute
On August 28th, police arrived at the couple’s residence. The situation quickly deteriorated when the homeowner began verbally confronting the officer, reportedly unleashing a barrage of insults, including a peculiar question: “Do you know what, did you fall from March?” followed by vulgar swearing.
The homeowner later claimed in court that any offensive statements were made in response to what he perceived as unwarranted police intrusion. “They asked me to let them into the house and asked for the legal speed for no apparent reason,” he explained. His wife declined to provide any comment regarding the incident.
Physical Altercation and Arrest
The arrival of the husband’s cousin at the scene further complicated matters. According to reports, the wife then physically engaged with the cousin, grabbing her right forearm and attempting to pull her inside the house, shouting, “Come on, we take care of some things!” The cousin was able to break free.
Court Ruling and Remaining Payment
The offense court in Trogir ultimately sentenced both individuals to a fine of €100 each. However, due to the two days they already spent in custody – which is being credited towards their penalty – the couple only has €20 remaining to pay. They have been granted eight days to file an appeal.
The incident highlights the potential for rapid escalation in interactions with law enforcement and underscores the importance of maintaining respectful communication, even when disagreements arise.
