Experts emphasize that prevention is paramount to mitigating this crisis, which significantly increases the risk of heart, kidney, and metabolic complications. “The Mediterranean diet acts synergistically to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation,” explained a lead researcher from the University of Navarra. “With PREDIMED-Plus, we demonstrate that combining calorie control and physical activity enhances these benefits. It is a tasty, sustainable and culturally accepted approach that offers a practical and effective way to prevent type 2 diabetes – a global disease that is, to a large extent, avoidable.”
Scaling Prevention: Challenges and Opportunities
An accompanying editorial in Annals of Internal Medicine lauded the study’s clinical relevance and potential as a preventative model. However, nutrition and public health experts cautioned that replicating these results outside the Mediterranean region – particularly in the U.S. – will require addressing systemic barriers. These include unequal access to healthy foods, limitations in urban environments that discourage physical activity, and a lack of readily available professional guidance.
