A former New York City mayor vigorously defended the historical legacy of Christopher Columbus, asserting that attempts to discredit the explorer ignore the context of his era and the profound impact of his voyages.
Speaking Monday on Newsmax’s “Carl Higbie FRONTLINE,” the former mayor emphasized the importance of celebrating Columbus Day as a tribute to courage, discovery, and the Italian-American spirit. He characterized recent criticisms of Columbus as “completely ridiculous,” arguing they focus on perceived wrongs through a modern lens.
“It’s completely ridiculous to defame Columbus on things that he did or didn’t do wrong — things we’re not even sure of — that were quite a bit routine, if not wrong but accepted, in that day and age,” he stated.
The former mayor stressed the necessity of viewing history with perspective, acknowledging the violence and uncertainty that characterized the lives of both European explorers and native populations. He argued that attributing “evil” solely to one side is a simplification of a complex historical confrontation.
“The natives who were here weren’t exactly the most peaceful group of people that ever lived,” he said. “So it was a terrible confrontation. Doesn’t make it right; it makes it part of history. The evil is not all on one side; it rarely is.”
He lauded Columbus not as the initial “discoverer” of America, but as the figure who ensured the world became aware of its existence. “He wasn’t the discoverer of America — he was the man who made sure we found out about America,” he explained. “Maybe it would have been a tree falling in the forest and nobody heard it if it wasn’t for this courageous, courageous man who put his life at risk numerous times to go across the ocean.”
