Top Korean Inspector Publicly Condemns Prosecutor in Drug Investigation Dispute
A high-ranking police official has ignited a public controversy in South Korea by openly criticizing a top prosecutor, alleging an insulting attempt too control a sensitive drug investigation. The fallout stems from a probe into suspected external pressure surrounding a drug investigation within Incheon Customs.
Seoul, South Korea – Chief Inspector Baek Hae-ryong, slated for assignment to a joint investigation team formed by the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office and the police, leveled sharp criticism at Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office Chief Lim Eun-jeong on Thursday, December 15th. According to reports, Inspector Baek characterized Chief Prosecutor Lim’s offer to form an investigation team as “insulting.”
Rather of joining the team, Inspector Baek took annual leave and opted to voice his concerns publicly. He appeared on the News Tomato YouTube channel ‘News Insider’ where he stated, “(Chief Prosecutor Lim) suggested that we gather five people, including myself, to investigate drugs, and I immediately declined. (The reason) was becuase I felt insulted.”
The core of the dispute centers on allegations that former President Yoon Seok-yeol and his wife were involved in a drug monopoly scheme.Inspector Baek alleges that despite claims of a thorough investigation into all involved parties, Chief Prosecutor Lim appears resistant to fully exploring these claims. “they are risking everything to claim that all agencies were involved in the drug monopoly business of former President Yoon Seok-yeol and his wife, but District Prosecutor General Lim’s position is that it should not be investigated,” he said.
This public rebuke marks a important shift in Inspector Baek’s relationship with Chief Prosecutor Lim. Just last July,the two met at the Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office in Seoul,where Inspector Baek publicly expressed solidarity with the prosecutor,stating,”There are some things I sympathize with (with Chief Prosecutor Lim). We went through hardships (together), so there are parts where we feel comforted just by looking at each other’s eyes.”
the change in tone appears to be rooted in disagreements over the structure of the investigation. Following instructions from President Lee Jae-myung, the Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office proposed a separate five-person investigation team, including Inspector Baek, focused on customs drug suspicions – specifically excluding investigations into potential “external pressure” where Inspector Baek could be a witness or subject.
Inspector Baek has countered this approach, arguing that the prosecution’s involvement in the investigation is inappropriate given its potential stake in the outcome. “The prosecution is also one of the parties to the investigation and the joint venture team is an illegal organization,” he asserted.
The unfolding situation highlights a growing tension between the prosecution and the police, and raises questions about the impartiality of the investigation into the sensitive allegations surrounding the former president and the Incheon Customs drug case. The public airing of these grievances is likely to further fuel scrutiny of the investigation and its potential political implications.
