Wali made his directorial debut in 1999 with SJ Surya. The film starring Ajith in a double role became a huge hit. Producer Ponikapur had decided to remake the hit Hindi film in Hindi. Accordingly, Bonnie Kapoor acquired the rights to remake the film from Nick Arts SS Chakraborty, the producer of the Wally film.

At the same time, SJ directed the film in Hindi. Surya had planned. In this situation, SJ Surya had filed a petition in the Chennai High Court that Ponnikapur should not remake the movie Wali on the basis that the story belongs to the author. When the case came up for hearing, the High Court issued an interim injunction allowing Bonnie Kapoor to start work on the Hindi remake. The appeal filed by SJ Surya against this came up for hearing in the Supreme Court yesterday. The judges dismissed the petition and said that SJ Surya could claim the rights to the film depending on the verdict in the original case in the Chennai High Court.
