Poland Investigates Man’s Death Following Dog attack in Rural Łódź Voivodeship
A tragic incident in the village of Karnice, Poland, is under inquiry after a 76-year-old man died following an encounter with dogs. Authorities are considering multiple possibilities, including a potential heart attack or stroke, alongside the possibility that the dogs directly caused his death.
The incident unfolded in Karnice, a small community of under one hundred residents located in the Łódź Voivodeship. According to initial reports, the man was visiting the property of a local woman, Krystyna, when he was bitten by dogs. He was discovered approximately 100 meters from the property.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain unclear, prompting a thorough investigation by the District Prosecutor’s office in Sieradz. “The autopsy scheduled for the end of the week will make it possible to answer the question about the cause of the injured party’s death and only then will it be possible to determine whether animals had any connection with the death of the 76-year-old resident of the Poddębice district,” stated Jolanta Szkilnik, spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.
Investigation Focuses on Multiple Scenarios
While the prosecutor’s office initially assumed the dog bite may have been the direct cause of death, choice theories are being explored. One source familiar with the case suggests the man may have lost consciousness due to a medical event – such as a heart attack or stroke – and the dogs may have approached him afterward.
Local residents report the man frequently cycled in the area, often dismounting to walk his bike due to the challenging terrain near Mrs. Krysia’s farm.
Owner’s Condition and Prior Intervention
The owner of the property, Krystyna, lives alone on a remote farm. Following the tragedy, six dogs were removed from the property and taken to a local animal shelter. However, as of Tuesday afternoon, other animals were still observed on the land, appearing protective of their owner.
Authorities describe Mrs. Krystyna as speaking incoherently. On Tuesday, two police officers were stationed to monitor the situation, followed by a visit from municipal officials. The officials reportedly waited for a minute before Mrs. Krystyna allowed them entry to her home. During the hour-long visit, she spoke erratically about her family, claiming to have children and a visiting son.
According to Alicja Bartczak, spokesman for the District police Headquarters in Poddębice, police had not received any prior reports or intervened in any incidents involving Mrs. Krystyna and her dogs before the day of the tragedy. This lack of prior intervention raises questions about potential warning signs and preventative measures.
