Keyter Finds New Home with Lions After Injury-Marred Stint at Sharks

A fresh start awaits South African rugby player Eduan Keyter, who is settling into life with the Lions after a mid-year transfer from the Sharks. The move offers the 29-year-old winger a chance to reignite his career following a frustrating period hampered by injuries.
From Griquas Standout to Lions Hope
Keyter first made a significant impact in 2019 with the Griquas, quickly establishing himself as a dynamic player with blistering pace. In 31 appearances for the Kimberley-based team, he impressively scored 18 tries, drawing attention from larger franchises. This success led to a move to the Sharks in 2021, but his time in Durban was unfortunately disrupted.
The past three seasons with the Sharks proved challenging for Keyter, as he battled a series of injuries, most notably an ACL injury. Despite the setbacks, he remains optimistic about his future.
Embracing the Lions’ Attacking Style
Speaking to media representatives on Tuesday, Keyter expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Lions. “Yeah, it’s quite exciting for me, I like the brand of rugby the Lions play. I like running with the ball and putting my body on the line,” he stated.
He highlighted the ease of adapting to the Lions’ playing style, contrasting it with his previous experience. “It was quite an easy adjustment; it’s made an easy transition for me coming from the Sharks’ kicking game to a more attacking game. It suits me quite well.”
Recovery and Confidence Ahead of Ulster Clash
Keyter is also encouraged by his physical condition. “I had a big knee operation, which was a major problem, but my body is feeling good and I’m really excited about the upcoming season,” he shared. He emphasized his commitment to maintaining peak fitness, adding, “I am working my hardest and doing my best to stay fit and on top of my game.”
Looking ahead to this weekend’s match against Ulster at Ellis Park, Keyter is feeling confident. The team has set an ambitious goal: “We set a goal for ourselves that we must get ten points from these two games, and I think [last week] it was a good start.” He believes their recent win has instilled a crucial sense of belief within the squad. “The win just gave us a bit of confidence and belief in ourselves. It’s made us ready for the upcoming game.”
