The world of Asian entertainment is mourning the loss of Benz Hui, a celebrated Hong Kong actor who died at the age of 76. The cause of death was multiple organ failure resulting from a battle with cancer, according to reports from Hong Kong media outlets like Ming Pao and Oriental Daily. Hui was known for his prolific career and warm personality.
A Life Bridging Hong Kong and Singapore
Hui enjoyed a distinguished career in Hong Kong television, becoming a household name through iconic TVB series such as The Final Combat (1989) and Golden Faith (2001). In recent years, he sought a semi-retired life in Singapore with his wife, Angeli Lung, and daughter, Charmaine Hui. The family resided in a 4,000 sq ft bungalow in the Yishun area, a detail noted by former Member of Parliament Lee Bee Wah.
Ms. Lee, who represented the Nee Soon GRC from 2011 to 2020, shared a 2019 photo with Hui and his family on Facebook, expressing her deep sadness at his passing. “I can only say he was a very good person and it’s just too early for him to be gone,” she told local news outlet asiaone. She recalled a fond first encounter at his home, which was then undergoing renovation, and their subsequent exchanges. Ms. Lee noted she was particularly close to Hui’s wife and daughter,enjoying frequent conversations with them,with Hui often listening and contributing occasional jokes.
Hui had even offered his assistance with local events in her ward, though Ms. Lee respected his busy schedule and refrained from imposing. Their last conversation took place earlier in 2025, and Ms. Lee had been anticipating a reunion with the family the following month in Singapore for a friend’s wedding.
The news of Hui’s death prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance on social media platforms. Singaporean actor ben Yeo, who co-starred with Hui in the Singapore-Hong Kong drama Yummy Yummy (2005), shared an article about his passing on Instagram Stories, writing, “(I was) very lucky to have (had) a chance to work with you.”

Chan wrote, “Thank you for all your works, which accompanied me growing up.”
Singer-actress Miriam Yeung, who shared the screen with hui in Love Undercover (2002) and its sequel, posted a photo from the film trilogy, lamenting that their recent reunion at the beginning of the year would be their last.She praised Hui’s generosity and support, particularly early in her career, and fondly remembered his parenting advice after she became a mother in 2012.
