Unlike the automotive industry’s relatively late adoption of software-defined vehicles, Porsche is proactively embedding this approach directly into its production processes, starting with a new joint venture focused on high-performance battery cell production.

The newly established joint venture, V4Smart, with Porsche Werkzeugbau as a strategic partner, is at the heart of this initiative to create flexible, software-controlled production processes capable of rapid adaptation to evolving requirements. This contrasts sharply with traditional manufacturing, often characterized by rigid structures and siloed data.

Software-Defined Manufacturing represents a paradigm shift where software is decoupled from hardware, replacing inflexible systems with adaptable networks. In practice, this means integrating digital functions previously embedded in production controls into higher-level systems.While critical, millisecond-level processes will still occur directly on the machines, the majority of production logic will be managed centrally.

V4Smart and Porsche Werkzeugbau strategically designed their production line on a greenfield site in Nördlingen, Germany. This allowed them to focus on building a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to manufacturing high-performance lithium-ion round cells. The production line was developed and installed within a year, a remarkably swift timeline.
Notably, this facility is the first series round cell production line in Europe capable of producing 80 battery cells per minute. Achieving this throughput required significant investment in technical infrastructure and a commitment to the Software-Defined Manufacturing model.

A key enabler of this rapid development was the consistent implementation of a cloud-only solution. According to a led architect for the project, “In the project, the consistent implementation of a cloud-only solution contributed substantially to accelerating the project. This enabled the software-defined manufacturing approach to develop its added value quickly and in a targeted manner.”
The integration of SAP S/4HANA public Cloud and SAP DM (Digital Manufacturing) provided a fully digital platform for managing production, logistics, and quality control.Utilizing a modern data architecture – a “lakehouse” based on AWS solutions – the system monitors “all data points of each cell in real time upon commissioning, thus ensuring the quality of the cells.”
Data quality Drives Efficiency
The emphasis on data quality has been instrumental in V4Smart’s success. A company CEO praised the collaborative effort, stating, “Within a very short time, MHP, together with V4Smart and Porsche, was able to increase the data quality to such an extent that the transition to series production was possible.”
Automated data quality monitoring ensures the facility maintains its impressive throughput of 80 battery cells per minute. This high-quality data allows V4Smart to monitor and control the manufacturing process in real time, minimizing “digital waste” and maximizing efficiency.
Record-Breaking Production for the Porsche 911
just weeks after commencing production, V4Smart was leveraging high-precision data analysis to optimize its operations. In april 2025, the facility began producing battery cells for the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid, marking a significant milestone in the company’s journey. This achievement underscores the potential of Software-Defined Manufacturing to accelerate innovation and deliver cutting-edge products to market.
