Tuscany and Liguria Face Intense Flooding
As of 2:10 PM,reports indicate ample flooding in the provinces of Pisa and Livorno,Tuscany.A “violent storm” struck Livorno earlier in the day, prompting immediate action from civil protection and municipal police.Affected areas within the city include Via Cimarosa, Via Mondolfi, the Tre Ponti, and Picchianti neighborhoods. Authorities have closed the underpass on Via firenze in both directions, according to a report from Livorno Today.Rainfall accumulations in the Abetone area of the apennines have reached a staggering 180mm.
Emilia-Romagna Under Pressure
Flooding is also impacting the Bologna area of Emilia-Romagna, specifically in the Berzantina area and Castel di Casio. As of 12:00 PM,river levels were rising across the region,with the Reno River exceeding the second alert threshold in its upstream section.Rainfall accumulations in the Abetone region have surpassed 170mm.

Throughout the day, the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines have been battered by relentless rainfall. By 10:40 AM, localized accumulations reached 150mm, with the Abetone area receiving the highest amounts, followed by Cimone at over 120mm. Earlier, at 7:45 AM, an Atlantic disturbance brought widespread rain and showers to northern Italy, extending from the Northwest through Emilia, Lombardy, and Triveneto, and southward into Tuscany and Sardinia. Upper Tuscany was particularly hard hit, with over 100mm of rainfall recorded in the Abetone area. Liguria also experienced significant rainfall, peaking at over 80mm in the Genoese hinterland, though conditions there were beginning to ease.
Snowfall in the Alps
The adverse weather isn’t limited to rain. Snow levels have dropped in the western Alps, with snowfall beginning between 1300 and 1500 meters in piedmont and Valle d’Aosta. Above 2300 meters, a fresh layer of snow has accumulated to around 20cm. Some snowfall has also been reported in the central-eastern Alps above 2000 meters.
Looking Ahead: Forecast for the Next Several Hours
Conditions are expected to vary across Italy. In Northern Italy, rainfall will ease in western Veneto and Emilia during the afternoon, but will persist into the evening in eastern Emilia, Romagna, eastern veneto, and Friuli Venezia Giulia. Liguria is expected to see intensifying rainfall throughout the day. The central regions will experience continued bad weather with rain and thunderstorms extending from Tuscany to Lazio and Umbria, while the Adriatic side should see clearing conditions, particularly in Abruzzo. Upper Tuscany and Lazio are forecast to receive the highest rainfall accumulations, perhaps reaching 100mm by midnight. Southern Italy will see rain and showers, with thunderstorms expected in western Sardinia. The Adriatic and southern peninsula are expected to remain sunnier and drier.A Scirocco wind is also prevailing.
