Tupaea’s Retention Signals Intent as All Blacks Prepare for Ireland Test
The All Blacks have sent a clear message ahead of their clash with Ireland in Chicago, retaining quinn Tupaea at center despite a wealth of options, in a selection that underscores confidence in the young player’s burgeoning potential. Head coach Scott Robertson unveiled a largely predictable match-day squad for Sunday’s Test (9:10am NZT), but the decision to stick with Tupaea after his impressive performance against the Wallabies has drawn significant attention.
Robertson’s squad sees the return of veteran playmaker Beauden Barrett from a shoulder injury, slotting him in at No.10 in place of Damian McKenzie, who shifts to the bench. However, the most debated position – center – has been settled with Tupaea earning the nod over Billy proctor and Rieko Ioane.
tupaea’s continued selection is a significant vote of confidence following a standout showing against Australia in Perth, where he scored two tries and forged a promising partnership with Jordie Barrett.Despite being relatively new to the center position for the All Blacks, Tupaea has quickly demonstrated an aptitude for the role. “He took to it like a natural,” one analyst noted, highlighting the player’s seamless transition.
While Ioane filled the center role in the final stages of the recent Bledisloe Cup victory, Robertson clearly believes Tupaea is the best option to address what has been a historically problematic position for the team, particularly against a formidable Irish side. Proctor, who held the role earlier in the year, has faced scrutiny regarding his defensive awareness and attacking impact, while Ioane is increasingly viewed as a wing specialist by the selectors. Notably, neither Proctor nor Ioane made the final 23-man squad.
Beyond the center debate, several other key changes have been made. Ethan de Groot returns from a concussion to start at loosehead prop, and Caleb Clarke is back on the left wing after recovering from an ankle injury. These selections see De Groot preferred over Tamaiti williams and Clarke ahead of Leicester Fainga’anuku, both of whom are named on the reserves bench. Josh Lord replaces the injured Patrick Tuipulotu, who is unavailable due to a shoulder problem.
Perhaps equally significant is the retention of No. 8 Peter Lakai,who impressed in his previous outing against the Wallabies,keeping Wallace Sititi on the bench.

Ireland are a strong side and will have a loud contingent of supporters here in Chicago, so we are prepared for a passionate clash on the Soldier Field stage.” He added,”We have had a great week together leading up to the Test and now we are looking forward to the contest on Saturday afternoon.”
The All Blacks and Ireland have a closely contested history, with five wins apiece since Ireland’s historic victory over New Zealand in Chicago in 2016. the All Blacks have emerged victorious in the last two encounters, including a November 2023 match in Dublin. The Chicago match is reportedly a sellout, promising a vibrant atmosphere for the highly anticipated contest.
