He will vacate the 30-room Royal Lodge in Windsor and relocate to private accommodation on the sandringham estate in Norfolk, with King Charles providing private financial support.
The decision follows weeks of negotiation after andrew initially offered to voluntarily relinquish his titles, a gesture that failed to quell public outcry, particularly regarding his continued occupancy of Royal Lodge. “I think the vast majority of people in this country will think that it’s the right thing to do,” stated a government minister during an interview with BBC Breakfast. Describing Andrew as now “an ordinary member of the public,” the minister suggested he should comply with any requests for information from the United States.”I think that just as with any ordinary member of the public, if there were requests from another jurisdiction of this kind, I would expect any decently minded person to comply with that request. So I feel exactly the same in this situation.” the minister further added, “If Andrew is asked to do somthing by a Senate committee then I would have thought that he would want to comply.”
Royal Family Lineage Remains Intact for Andrew’s Daughters
While Prince Andrew has been stripped of his titles, his daughters, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, will retain theirs. This is in accordance with a 1917 letters patent issued by King George V, which stipulates that daughters of a son of a sovereign are entitled to maintain their royal status.
Despite no longer being a working royal, Andrew remains eighth in line to the throne and technically holds the position of Counsellor of State, though this role has been described as “inactive.”
Palace Utilized Royal Prerogative to Expedite Removal of Dukedom
The Justice Secretary, David Lammy, as Lord Chancellor, is responsible for maintaining the roll of the peerage and was expected to receive royal warrants from the King to formally remove Andrew’s name. The exact timing of this process remains unclear.The King opted to utilize his powers of royal prerogative to abolish Andrew’s dukedom, avoiding the need for potentially time-consuming legislation. Epstein Allegations and Recent Revelations Fueled the King’s Decision
The King’s decision was heavily influenced by mounting evidence and allegations surrounding Andrew’s relationship with the late Jeffrey Epstein.Recent revelations included claims that Andrew allegedly requested his police protection officer to investigate his accuser, Virginia Giuffre. A leaked email also suggested Andrew may have misrepresented the timeline of his contact with Epstein, contradicting his previous statements in a 2019 Newsnight interview.
Furthermore, a photograph surfaced depicting Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein at Royal Lodge, reportedly during Princess Beatrice’s 18th birthday party. The posthumous publication of Giuffre’s memoir, Nobody’s Girl, containing renewed allegations of sexual assault – allegations Andrew strenuously denies – also played a significant role.
The Public Accounts Committee added pressure by releasing a list of detailed questions sent to the Crown Estate regarding Andrew’s 75-year lease on Royal Lodge.
Giuffre’s family released a statement to the BBC, celebrating the outcome. “Today, an ordinary American girl from an ordinary American family brought down a British prince with her truth and extraordinary courage,” the statement read.
