Goat sales at Ettayapuram market weed out: Sales of up to Rs 5 crore on the eve of Ramadan

Ettayapuram: Goats were sold at the Ettayapuram market during the Ramadan festival. Traders said the goats sold for up to Rs 5 crore. Ettayapuram Goat Market in Thoothukudi District is one of the important sheep markets in the Southern Districts. Goats and sheep from various districts including Thoothukudi, Nellai, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar are brought to the market here on Saturdays. Usually up to 5 thousand goats are for sale.

Between 10,000 and 15,000 goats are sold during the festive seasons, including Diwali, Pongal, Ramadan, Bakreed and Christmas.
After sales have been sluggish for the past 2 years due to corona damage, the sheep market has returned to normal for a few weeks. Business was weeded out as the market rallied the night before yesterday (Friday). With only a couple of days to go before Ramadan, more goats than usual were brought in for sale.

Sales ranged from 10kg to 30kg. The price was also in demand. The sheep were bought by competing traders yesterday morning. Traders from various districts including Ramanathapuram, Nellai and Virudhunagar bought the goats. According to traders, goats were sold for around Rs 5 crore in a single day yesterday.
