Despite the enthusiastic support of their home crowd, North Carolina A&T struggled to find their rhythm against Hofstra’s relentless defense. The loss drops the Aggies to 11-9 overall and 7-4 in league play, ending a promising five-match winning streak. While the Aggies showcased flashes of potential, they were ultimately unable to overcome the Pride’s consistent performance.
Key Performances and Set-by-Set Breakdown
Hofstra effectively neutralized North Carolina A&T’s top offensive threat, Tyne Ross, limiting her to 10 kills on a .109 hitting percentage. Freshman Zariah Winnton, recently named CAA Rookie of the Week, contributed five kills for the Aggies. However, it was junior Mikala Sampson’s 11 kills and freshman Nicole Ellis’s efficient performance – eight kills with a .536 hitting percentage and two total blocks – that provided the most consistent offensive output for North Carolina A&T.
The first set saw Hofstra jump out to an early 7-1 lead, establishing control from the outset. Despite a late push from the Aggies, highlighted by a Ross service ace, the Pride closed out the set 25-20. The second set proved to be a heartbreaking affair for North Carolina A&T, as they initially surged ahead 8-0, only to watch Hofstra mount a comeback. After a back-and-forth battle, the Pride ultimately prevailed 28-26, capitalizing on a crucial 4-0 run and a late ace from Lauren Konzen. The third set saw Hofstra maintain their momentum, building a significant lead and securing the match with a 25-20 victory.
“Obviously, not the outcome that we wanted today,” said A&T head coach Hal Clifton. “We knew this was going to be a tough match, and I thought we played a good end of the first set and a solid second set. We just weren’t able to close out that set. We had a great crowd tonight, and they saw some really high-level volleyball.”
Looking Ahead: Rematch Scheduled for Sunday
Leonor Polezzi recorded her 11th double-double of the season and the 22nd of her career with 33 assists and 16 digs, demonstrating her all-around impact for the Aggies. The two teams will meet again on Sunday at Moore Gymnasium, with the first serve scheduled for 1 p.m., offering North Carolina A&T an immediate opportunity to respond and even the series.
