Officers, dressed from head to toe in the traditional white jumpsuit with their faces masked and covered with a visor, take a chain sample from the noses of the residents who are parading. “Three times a week, we have to get tested. It’s compulsory and the system is well established,” says Jean-Philippe, a 61-year-old Frenchman who has lived in China for fourteen years.
