Bogotá Student’s Halloween Night Ends in Tragedy, Sparking Homicide Investigation
A Halloween party in Bogotá, Colombia, turned deadly on October 31st, resulting in the death of Jaime Esteban Moreno Jaramillo, a 20-year-old systems Engineering student at the Universidad de los Andes. The young man succumbed to severe head trauma hours after being brutally beaten outside a nightclub, prompting a homicide investigation and the arrest of one suspect.
Authorities responded to the incident in the north of Bogotá during the early morning hours, initially detaining Juan Carlos Suárez Ortiz, Kaleidymar Paola Fernández Sulbarán, and Bertha Parra Torres. A commander of the barrios Unidos district stated that the three individuals, who were apprehended at the scene, had no prior criminal record, and the initial assessment suggested a possible altercation between them. However, the Prosecutor’s Office quickly focused its investigation on Suárez Ortiz, legalizing his capture while releasing the two women due to insufficient evidence.
Moreno was kicked in the face, leaving him unconscious in a public space.
Medical personnel diagnosed Moreno with “severe head trauma” and transported him to the ICU at the Simón Bolívar Hospital.Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the night of October 31st.Video footage broadcast by Citytv corroborated the witness’s account, bolstering the hypothesis of a random attack rather than a simple fight.
During the legalization hearing,questions arose regarding the witness’s initial statements,specifically a lack of direct identification of the attackers at the time of capture. An allegation of a violation of the right to remain silent was also raised but ultimately dismissed. Defense arguments posited that the incident might be linked to alleged improper conduct by the victim or a dispute over a taxi,claims vehemently rejected by the victim’s legal portrayal as “ruin.” Congresswoman María del Mar Pizarro also reportedly heard a hypothesis involving a disagreement over a taxi fare. Investigators are currently analyzing security camera footage from the area and inside the Before Club to identify a second assailant and establish a clear sequence of events.
A guarantee control judge validated the capture of Suárez Ortiz, confirming through camera footage that he was the individual who struck moreno, rendering him unconscious. While Suárez Ortiz has no prior criminal record, his history of minor infractions has come under scrutiny.
Camilo Rincón, the Moreno Jaramillo family’s lawyer, has announced intentions to pursue charges of aggravated homicide, asserting that the incident was a deliberate attack, not a spontaneous brawl. rincón believes a second attacker delivered the fatal blow and urged Suárez Ortiz to cooperate with authorities to reveal the identity of his accomplice.
The University of the Andes expressed its profound sorrow over the loss of Moreno, offering condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues and activating psychological support protocols. Those who knew Moreno remember him as a calm, disciplined young man with a passion for chess. His brother, David, described him as “the brother everyone should have had.” In a poignant public letter, his parents lamented the loss of “a splendid and irreplaceable being,” expressing their devastation.
The family’s lawyer attributed the attack to a growing “violent culture” among young people. A relative recalled Moreno confirming his attendance at a family gathering just hours before his death, a promise tragically unfulfilled.
A funeral service was held for Jaime Esteban Moreno on November 3rd at the Cristo rey Parish, followed by burial at the Jardines de Paz cemetery. Attendees united in a call for justice and the apprehension of all those responsible.
Congresswoman Pizarro, who also owns the Before Club, stated her solidarity with the Moreno family and confirmed that authorities have not yet requested access to the nightclub’s security footage, which she emphasized is crucial for identifying the second individual involved.
The Prosecutor’s Office is expected to file formal charges on November 5th. the Moreno Jaramillo family remains hopeful that the investigation will uncover the truth and bring those responsible for this senseless act to justice, honoring the memory of a promising young man whose future was tragically cut short.
