Williams F1 to Revive Iconic ‘W’ logo in 2026,Signaling a Return to Championship Ambitions

A reimagined version of the team’s classic logo will debut in the 2026 Formula 1 season, marking a deliberate connection to Williams’ storied past and a renewed focus on future success.

Williams Racing is embarking on a branding evolution, announcing plans to reinstate a modernized take on its celebrated “Forward W” logo starting in 2026. The move is widely interpreted as a symbolic gesture, aligning with the team’s ambition to reclaim its position as a frontrunner in the sport.

A Legacy Reimagined

The original “Forward W” logo, characterized by its slightly slanted design, adorned Williams cars from the team’s inception in 1977 through its period of dominance. It was present on every one of the team’s nine Constructors’ Championship winning cars, becoming synonymous with a golden era of Formula 1. The logo was retired in 2000 following a partnership with BMW, and while a ‘W’ logo has returned in recent years, it differed in style from the original.

According to a team statement, the new logo is “a 21st century reimagining of Frank Williams’ famous ‘forward W'” – a 21st century reimagining of Frank Williams’ famous ‘Forward W’. This signifies a deliberate effort to honor the team’s heritage while embracing a modern aesthetic.

A Historic Franchise Seeking a Revival

Williams Racing stands as the third most successful team in formula 1 history, boasting nine Constructors’ Championships and seven Drivers’ championships. Only Ferrari and McLaren have secured more titles.Despite a legacy built on autonomous achievement, the team has faced challenges in recent decades, with its last race victory occurring at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix.

The 1990s represented a notably dominant period for Williams, securing four Drivers’ and five Constructors’ Championships. Though, the 21st century has proven less fruitful, with the team striving to recapture its former glory.

New Ownership, Renewed Hope

In 2019, the Williams family sold the team to U.S. firm Dorilton capital. Following the passing of founder Frank Williams in 2021, Dorilton has articulated a clear objective: to restore Williams to its championship-winning form. The upcoming regulatory changes slated for 2026 are viewed as a potential catalyst for a reshuffling of the competitive order, offering Williams a strategic prospect.

“As a team we are inspired by our past but excited about our future, and committed to writing a new championship-winning chapter in williams’ history,” stated team boss James Vowles. “This evolved team identity reflects who we are, where we are going, and reintroduces our title-winning legacy to a growing F1 audience that was not following the sport when we were last dominant.”

Momentum Building in 2024

Progress is already evident in the current season. Williams currently holds fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, a importent enhancement fueled by the performance of drivers and the addition of Carlos Sainz for the 2025 season. Sainz secured a podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, marking the team’s first since 2021.

Notably, Williams has accumulated 111 points this season – exceeding its total from the previous seven seasons combined.

A New era: Atlassian Williams F1 Team

looking ahead, the team will officially be known as Atlassian williams F1 Team starting next year, building upon its existing partnership with the American-Australian software company, Atlassian, which became title partner at the beginning of 2025. This branding change underscores the team’s commitment to innovation and its expanding global reach.
