Stockport Train Station Evacuated Following Revelation of ‘Suspicious’ Item

A “do not travel” warning is in effect for multiple rail lines after Stockport railway station was evacuated Tuesday evening,November 4,2025,following the discovery of a potentially perilous item. The incident has caused widespread disruption to rail services and prompted a significant emergency response.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
Emergency crews were alerted to a possible threat at approximately 6:00 PM GMT on Greek Street in Stockport. A 200-meter cordon has been established around the station, and bomb units, alongside police, fire crews, and paramedics, are currently on the scene. The focus of the investigation centers on a footbridge within the station complex.
According to a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), “Just before 6pm this evening (Tuesday, 4th November), firefighters were called to reports of a suspicious item on Greek Street in Stockport.” Authorities believe the item in question is a suspicious suitcase, and some nearby homes have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Travel disruption and Rail Line Closures
The disruption is impacting numerous rail lines operated by Northern Trains and Avanti West Coast. Northern Trains has issued a “Do Not Travel” warning for the following routes until the end of service:
- Manchester Piccadilly to Chester
- Manchester Piccadilly to Stoke
- Manchester Piccadilly to Alderley Edge/Crewe – with diversions via Styal where possible, meaning stations between Stockport and Handforth will not be served.
- Manchester Piccadilly to Hazel Grove/buxton
“Customers are advised to travel via any alternative route using the ticket acceptance we have in place,” Northern Trains stated on social media platform X, formerly twitter. The company acknowledged limited availability of Rail Replacement buses.
An Avanti West Coast spokesperson confirmed that Stockport station is fully evacuated and all lines are blocked, advising customers to avoid travel to the station and consult their website or social media for updates.
Northern Assist reported earlier that services running through Stockport station would be cancelled or delayed by up to 45 minutes due to the ongoing emergency services operation.
Passengers Impacted and Shelter Locations
Passengers are experiencing significant delays and disruptions. Individuals are being held on various train services, including one train halted near Cheadle after passengers were informed of the “suspicious item.” Another service was redirected to Manchester via Wilmslow after being held outside of Stockport.
Those affected by the evacuation are reportedly seeking shelter in the nearby Army Reserve Center on Armoury Street and the Armoury Pub, after being advised to do so by the bomb disposal team.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities are working to resolve the incident as quickly and safely as possible.
