Mycélium Association Cultivates Critical Thinking and Well-being Through Philosophy and Mind-Body Practices

A growing French association, Mycélium, is fostering critical thinking, social skills, and well-being across generations through innovative workshops blending philosophy, meditation, and artistic expression. The organization’s impact is expanding, reaching individuals from ages four to 104, and demonstrating a significant demand for its unique approach.

Expanding Access to Philosophical Inquiry

Mycélium operates on multiple fronts, bringing its programs to diverse settings. The association actively engages with schools at all levels, as well as social and cultural institutions including libraries, detention centers, and social service organizations. They also participate in public events like trade fairs and festivals, broadening their reach and introducing their methods to wider audiences.

2024-2025 Season Highlights: Intergenerational Dialogue and Mindful Exploration

The 2024-2025 season was marked by a series of impactful initiatives. This past summer, residents of Rennes enjoyed a series of meditative walks in the Gayeulles, Maurepas, and Villejean parks, offering a tranquil escape amidst nature. Throughout the school year, Mycélium facilitated philosophy workshops for students in grades CP to CM2 at the Jacques Prévert school during extracurricular hours.

May 2025 saw the introduction of a novel yoga-philosophy workshop, designed to explore the concept of “slowness” through the integration of physical postures, breathwork, and philosophical contemplation. In March 2025, the association engaged children with the Brume comic strip in a philosophy workshop centered on the theme of fear at the Street of Books festival.

A particularly noteworthy event took place in November 2024: an intergenerational philosophy festival held at the Mabilais senior residence, bringing together CM2 students to discuss the question, “Does everyone make mistakes? What is the purpose of errors?” According to a facilitator, the event highlighted a surprising commonality: “It was an opportunity to realize that young and old share similar concerns!” The event drew approximately fifty participants and involved three Mycélium facilitators. In October 2024, the association also held a training session in impro-philo, exploring the synergy between theatrical improvisation and philosophical inquiry.

Growing Demand and Future Plans

Mycélium’s assessment of the past year is overwhelmingly positive. The association reports serving an increasingly diverse population, with growing interest from participants of all ages. Looking ahead to the remainder of 2025, Mycélium plans to continue offering both regular and one-off workshops focused on philosophy and mind-body practices.

Building on the success of the yoga-philosophy workshops, the association intends to establish regular meetings centered around various themes. They will also participate in the Philosophy Festival with a new intergenerational workshop exploring the theme of forgiveness, and a collaborative partnership with the performing arts company Le Ventre, which is currently developing a new show.

Mycélium remains committed to welcoming both participants and facilitators passionate about fostering cooperation, kindness, and attentive listening within the community.
