According to Au’s updated support page, customers must own a cellular version of the Apple Watch and subscribe to Au’s Starlink Direct service to access the satellite connectivity.
“Only text message sending and receiving via Apple Watch messages app is supported,” a company presentation clarified. This initial limitation suggests a phased rollout of features, with text messaging serving as the foundation for future capabilities.
Rogers Communications Brings Starlink to Apple Watch Users in Canada
The expansion isn’t limited to Japan. SpaceX’s Canadian partner, Rogers Communications, has also added support for the Apple Watch, offering the service as a free beta to all Canadian users. This broad availability underscores the rapid deployment of the technology across key markets.
Implications for the US Market and T-Mobile
The success of these international deployments raises expectations for a similar rollout in the United States. SpaceX’s US partner, T-Mobile, already supports ground-based cellular plans for the Apple Watch and its T-Satellite network supports over 70 phone models, including the iPhone 13 and iPhone Air. While T-Mobile has not yet commented on plans to extend Starlink connectivity to Apple Watches, industry observers believe it is a likely next step.
