Tony Leung to Headline 36th Singapore International Film Festival with ‘Silent Friend’
The 36th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) is set to welcome Hong Kong acting icon Tony Leung Chiu Wai, bolstering an already impressive lineup for Singapore’s largest film event. Leung will participate in a public dialogue on November 28th and attend a screening of his latest film, Silent Friend, on November 29th.
The SGIFF, running from November 26th to December 7th, promises a diverse cinematic experience featuring 120 films from over 45 countries. This year’s festival is particularly notable for its constellation of international stars, signaling Singapore’s growing prominence as a global hub for film.
‘Silent Friend’ and a Prestigious Venice Debut
Silent Friend, a co-production from Germany, France, and Hungary, marks a significant role for Leung, where he portrays a Hong Kong neurologist. The film delves into the lives of three characters connected by a German university across different time periods, exploring their shared yearning for connection with both nature and each other. Leung’s character’s research into infant brainwaves is disrupted by the COVID-19 lockdown, leading him to an unconventional experiment involving a ginkgo tree.
The film also stars French actress Lea Seydoux and Swiss actress Luna Wedler. Silent Friend premiered at the 82nd Venice Film Festival on September 5th, receiving widespread critical acclaim. Director Ildiko Enyedi was honored with the Fipresci prize, a highly respected award within the film industry, at the festival.
Engaging with Fans and Festival Details
Leung will engage directly with fans during “In Conversation With Tony Leung,” a dialogue session moderated by Rebecca Lim, a celebrated Mediacorp actress and returning festival ambassador. The session will be held at the Hibiscus Ballroom in Marina Bay Sands and will be conducted in both English and Cantonese, with simultaneous English interpretation.
Tickets for this exclusive event will become available on November 10th at noon via the Sistic website. Festival organizers confirmed that SG Culture Pass credits can be utilized for eligible screenings, further enhancing accessibility for local audiences.
A Star-Studded Lineup Beyond Leung
Beyond Leung’s highly anticipated appearance, the SGIFF will also welcome Taiwanese actress and filmmaker Shu Qi, who will walk the red carpet on opening night and present her directorial debut, Girl. Veteran South Korean actress and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung, alongside Oscar-nominated Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta, are also confirmed to attend, solidifying the festival’s international appeal.
