David Szalay Wins 2023 booker Prize for Novel ‘flesh’
Table of Contents
A compelling exploration of modern masculinity and identity, David Szalay’s sixth novel, flesh, has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Booker Prize. The British-Hungarian author was recognized Monday in London for his work, which judges lauded as “extraordinary” and unlike any other book thay had encountered.
A Singular Narrative
Flesh follows the life of Istvan, an enigmatic and emotionally detached man whose journey spans from a Hungarian housing estate to the opulent world of London and beyond. The novel is structured around three distinct sections, each depicting Istvan at different stages of his life – as a young man, a middle-aged executive, and an older man grappling with loss.
The win has generated significant buzz, attracting attention from both literary critics and popular culture figures.Actress Sarah Jessica Parker served as one of the Booker Prize judges, while musician Stormzy recorded an extract from Flesh for a short film presented at the award ceremony. Pop star Dua Lipa, who interviewed Szalay at the New york Public Library in September, previously selected the novel for her book club, describing it as a “tense and gripping read.”

Szalay himself expressed a sense of disbelief upon receiving the award. “I was feeling a bit dazed,” he told the BBC,adding that he had spent so much time preparing for a potential loss that the win felt surreal. “But it’s fantastic, of course.”
A Masterclass in Minimalism
Critics have consistently praised Szalay’s pared-down writing style. The Guardian called Flesh a “brilliantly spare portrait of a man” and a “thrilling exploration of what it means to be alive,” while The Sunday Times highlighted how the author uses a single character to represent “three stages of modern man.”
The novel’s innovative use of “white space” – even employing blank pages to depict grief – was a particular point of admiration. “We loved the spareness of the writing,” Doyle explained.”We loved how so much is revealed without us being overly aware of it being revealed… I found it riveting, and I thought the dialog was superb – and the absence of it was superb.”
Themes of Modern Life
booker Prize organizers described Flesh as a profound “meditation on class, power, intimacy, migration and masculinity.” The judges found the work to be “spare, disciplined, urgent, honest and heartbreaking,” with Szalay demonstrably “breaking new ground” in contemporary fiction.
This is not Szalay’s first recognition from the Booker Prize. He was previously nominated in 2016 for All That Man Is, another novel exploring themes of modern masculinity. As this year’s winner, szalay receives a prize of £50,000.
