A potentially hazardous asteroid, designated 2024 YR4, poses a risk of impacting the Moon, with consequences that could extend to Earth’s orbiting infrastructure. A lunar impact from 2024 YR4 could create a crater approximately 1 kilometer wide and eject up to 10,000 tons of lunar material into space. NASA’s successful DART mission, which demonstrated the feasibility of altering an asteroid’s orbit through kinetic impact, provides a proven framework for such efforts.

Other potential deflection strategies being considered include:

  • Nuclear detonation: Changing the asteroid’s course with a close-range explosion.
  • Ion thrust: Gently nudging the asteroid off course using sustained propulsion.

While a direct threat to people on Earth is not anticipated, officials emphasize the potential for disruption to vital space-based assets. A senior official stated, “A lunar impact would not directly threaten the Earth, but could cause serious damage to orbiting infrastructure.” ESA, while not currently allocating specific resources to monitor or divert 2024 YR4 in its 2025 budget, has committed to re-evaluating precautionary measures following the JWST observations.

The situation underscores the growing importance of planetary defense and the need for continued investment in space-based observation and mitigation technologies.
