air fryer Risks: Expert Warns Popular TikTok Recipe Could Damage Appliance, Studies Link to Carcinogens

The convenience of air frying comes with potential health and appliance risks, as a growing body of research and warnings from industry professionals reveal.
The air fryer has rapidly become a kitchen staple, with 2.6 million units purchased in France alone in 2024. This surge in popularity is fueled by the promise of healthier, faster cooking. However, emerging concerns suggest that not all air fryer recipes are created equal, and some could pose risks to both your health and your appliance. A growing number of viral videos, particularly on tiktok, are showcasing perhaps perilous practices, prompting warnings from experts.
While air fryers offer a convenient option to traditional frying, generating food with less oil, scientific studies are beginning to highlight potential health risks associated with their use. Intense heat generated during air frying can produce perfluoroalkylated and polyfluoroalkylated substances, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has identified as carcinogenic. Furthermore, bisphenol A, found in some plastic components, can act as an endocrine disruptor, interfering with hormone function.
Recent research published in Frontiers also indicates an increased presence of acrylamide after cooking in an air fryer. This neurotoxic and potentially carcinogenic compound reaches higher levels compared to other cooking methods. However, experts recommend mitigating these risks through gentle cooking, rinsing potatoes before cooking, and rigorous appliance maintenance.
Popcorn and Potential Appliance Failure
One practice causing particular concern among appliance manufacturers is the use of air fryers for making popcorn. Oi Ping Fok, Product Manager at Ninja, a major appliance manufacturer, expressed strong reservations. “I see a lot of people using the Airfryer to make popcorn, but we don’t recommend it,” she explained.
The issue, according to Fok, lies in the rapid expansion of popcorn kernels during cooking. “During cooking, the corn kernels double in volume,” she stated, adding that this expansion can obstruct the tank and interfere with the resistance, potentially leading to fatal overheating and irreversible damage to the appliance. Other foods are also flagged as potentially problematic, as previously reported by Melty.
A recent TikTok video showcasing a speedy popcorn recipe has garnered thousands of views, despite the warnings. The video demonstrates mixing corn kernels with spray oil and salt before cooking on a standard air fryer program. “In just 8 minutes at 200 degrees, corn kernels transform into flavorful golden popcorn,” the creator boasts.
though, comments on the video reveal user concerns about the potential dangers of the method. Safer alternatives, such as using a traditional pot or pan with a small amount of oil, exist for enjoying popcorn without risking damage to an expensive appliance. Experts emphasize that proven, traditional methods are the most reliable way to protect your air fryer from costly repairs.
