At the 59th Venice Art Biennale from April 22nd, art enthusiasts can see something really amazing: the painting robot lady Ai-Da.
Ai-Da is the world’s first humanoid robot artist. The robot was presented for the first time in 2019 at Oxford University. The special thing about Ai-Da: Each painting is unique.
The inventor and developer of Ai-Da, Aidan Meller, explained at the launch: “The work that she does is new every time. If you had her portray you twice, it would be completely different portraits.”
The performance at the Venice exhibition aims to showcase Ai-Da’s growing talent as an artist. She made her first drawings in 2019 at the University of Oxford.

She held a pencil in her robotic hand and used algorithms to sketch images based on what she could see with her camera eyes. She collects information and processes it again and again with the constantly growing algorithms – her “knowledge” so to speak – and creates works of art.
Her first self-portrait followed in 2021 and Venice will feature her first paintings, made like her human counterparts with a real color palette and a new state-of-the-art arm. The highlight of the exhibition will be Ai-Da painting live. The robot will paint four portraits during the vernissage.
