A small parcel, arriving after months of wartime delays, offered a tangible symbol of this resilience: a 175-page print magazine titled “The Power Within.” This anthology, a first for the digital newsroom, collects three years of reporting and photography from journalists living and working through Russia’s full-scale invasion. The magazine’s cover juxtaposes the grim reality of drone warfare near Bakhmut with the vibrant energy of a Kharkiv rave, a powerful statement about Ukrainian perseverance.
From Startup to Essential Voice
Founded in November 2021, The Kyiv Independent emerged from frustration with editorial interference at its predecessor publication. Just three months later, Russia launched its “special military operation,” thrusting the fledgling newsroom into the center of a global conflict. The publication’s Twitter following skyrocketed from 20,000 to over one million during the first week of the invasion, demonstrating an immediate and critical need for independent, on-the-ground reporting.
Today, The Kyiv Independent has grown from an initial team of 18 to more than 80 journalists, videographers, and staff. The organization has produced 10 documentaries investigating Russian war crimes and published over 30,000 stories, earning more than 20 international journalism awards along the way.
A Reader-Supported Model for Independence
Crucially, The Kyiv Independent operates on a paywall-free model, relying instead on the support of its readership. As editor-in-chief Olga Rudenko explained in a recent letter to subscribers, “A newspaper’s independence is fragile if all or a large chunk of its funding depends on a single source.” The publication is currently striving to increase its paying membership from over 23,000 to 25,000 by the end of the year.
Revenue is also generated through donations and an online store offering the print magazine, as well as merchandise like hats, totes, and T-shirts. This diversified approach underscores the organization’s commitment to financial sustainability and editorial independence.
Capturing Life Amidst Devastation
“The Power Within” magazine is more than just a collection of news reports; it’s an attempt to capture the multifaceted experience of life in Ukraine during wartime. The anthology features stories about the resilience of the Ukrainian spirit – from the opening of new bookstores offering solace through art, to the symbolic importance of McDonald’s (the country’s largest restaurant taxpayer, with many employees now serving in the military), and profiles of female partisans.
Reporter Francis Farrell, in a commentary included in the magazine, expressed a longing for the day he is “no longer a war journalist.” However, he also emphasized the critical importance of continued reporting, stating, “The price of indifference and hopelessness is paid in kilometers on the map, in the movement of the red stain, and in all the Ukrainian lives that could still be lost or destroyed on the way. There is no choice but to keep going.”
Ongoing Challenges and Unwavering Resolve
Even as The Kyiv Independent celebrates its achievements, the war continues to escalate. Just days before the release of the magazine, Russia launched a major attack on Kyiv, utilizing missiles and hundreds of drones – an assault President Volodymyr Zelensky described as one of the most severe on the capital to date. A photograph from November 14, 2025, depicts an apartment building in Kyiv damaged by a Russian airstrike, a stark reminder of the ongoing threat.
Despite these challenges, The Kyiv Independent remains steadfast in its mission to tell the story of Ukraine to the world, embodying a powerful and enduring spirit of resilience in the face of adversity.
