Italian Music Industry Grapples with AI, Streaming, and a Generational Shift
The Italian music industry is at a pivotal moment, navigating challenges posed by streaming, artificial intelligence, and evolving copyright laws while experiencing a surge in popularity from a new generation of artists. These issues were central to discussions at the opening conference of Milano Music Week, which focused on the future of the industry and its impact on artists, businesses, and the public.
The current landscape presents a mixed picture. Despite strong public engagement with live music and rising record sales – particularly for Italian productions both domestically and internationally – the industry faces a shortage of venues and precarious working conditions for entertainment professionals.
One key area of concern is the rise of artificial intelligence. Industry leaders emphasized the need for robust protections regarding content protection, transparency, and the upholding of copyright and related rights. A senior official stated that safeguarding intellectual property in the age of AI is paramount.
To bolster the Italian music sector, the platform ProMusica was presented as a tool to promote and facilitate its development.
Several prominent figures from across the industry were in attendance, including Bruno Sconocchia, president of Assoconcerti; Carlo Parodi, president of Assomusica; Rossella Lo Faro, corporate communications manager at FIMI; Paolo Franchini, a management advisor at SIAE; and Andrea Miccicè. According to a statement from the president of NUOVO IMAIE, “Politics lacks a plan for the music sector. We can assert the rights of artists, but we must be clear on how much the real return for them is, numbers aside.” This highlights a critical need for greater clarity and equitable distribution of revenue within the industry.

Further discussion on the impact of streaming on artist compensation will take place tomorrow at 2:30 PM at Palazzina Appiani, with a NUOVO IMAIE meeting titled “Streaming does not mean free: related rights in the digital age.” NUOVO IMAIE continues to advocate for the rights of artists and a sustainable future for the Italian music industry.
