iPhone 17 & Pixel 10 Pro Lead the Pack in 2025’s Wi-Fi Speed Race
Table of Contents
The competition for faster Wi-fi speeds is heating up among smartphone manufacturers, and new data reveals Apple’s iPhone 17 has made meaningful strides, though it still faces stiff competition from Android rivals like Google’s Pixel 10 Pro. A recent report from Ookla, analyzing performance between September 19 and october 29, 2025, highlights the advancements made with Apple’s N1 chip and the broader landscape of Wi-Fi capabilities in flagship devices.
Apple’s N1 Chip Delivers a Boost
The introduction of the N1 chip in the iPhone 17 lineup, including the iPhone Air, has demonstrably improved both download and upload speeds compared to previous generations. According to Ookla’s findings, the iPhone 16 achieved a global median download speed of 236.46Mbps, while the iPhone 17 saw a jump to 329.56Mbps. Upload speeds also experienced a substantial increase, climbing from 73.68Mbps on the iPhone 16 to 103.26Mbps on the iPhone 17 – an enhancement of approximately 40%. Autonomous testing by PCMag corroborated these gains, recording a maximum download speed of 668Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 278Mbps on the iPhone 17.
Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Takes the Global Crown
Despite Apple’s improvements, Google’s Pixel 10 Pro currently leads the pack in global median download speeds. Ookla’s data shows the Pixel 10 Pro achieving 335.33Mbps, slightly outpacing the iPhone 17’s 329.56Mbps. Following closely behind is the Xiaomi 15T Pro at 290.50Mbps, with Samsung devices averaging 250.83Mbps.
Wi-Fi 7 Limitations for Apple Devices
Apple’s current implementation of Wi-Fi 7 technology appears to be a limiting factor. A senior official stated that Apple currently caps it’s Wi-Fi frequency at 160MHz, while competitors like Samsung’s Galaxy S25 can utilize a wider 320MHz channel. This discrepancy potentially restricts the maximum achievable speeds on Apple devices.
north America Remains Apple’s Stronghold
Despite the Wi-Fi 7 limitations, the iPhone 17 continues to deliver the strongest median download speeds in north America. the median download speed in the US reached 416.14Mbps, with the Pixel 10 devices closely following at 411.21Mbps and Samsung’s S25 at 365.99Mbps.
Router Upgrades Lag Behind Device Capa
A lack of widespread Wi-fi 7 infrastructure. according to June 2025 testing, less than 2% of homes in the US have upgraded to a next-generation, wi-Fi 7-compatible router. This suggests that many users are not yet able to take advantage of the increased bandwidth offered by their new smartphones.
