A groundbreaking clinical trial in Russia is utilizing a patient’s own fat cells to regenerate damaged eardrums, marking a notable advancement in regenerative medicine and offering a potential new hope for individuals suffering from hearing loss. The Limitations of Customary Eardrum Repair
Currently, the standard treatment for a perforated eardrum is tympanoplasty, a surgical procedure involving patching the eardrum with cartilage or tissue harvested from elsewhere in the patient’s body. While often effective, tympanoplasty is a complex and time-consuming operation with a success rate that isn’t guaranteed. According to reports, the procedure fails in roughly 10-20% of cases due to the transplanted tissue failing to properly integrate with the surrounding tissue.
A Novel approach: Regenerating with Fat Cell “Spheroids”
The new method developed at Sechenov University bypasses these challenges by harnessing the body’s own regenerative capabilities. Researchers extract cells from the patient’s fatty tissue and cultivate them into microscopic cell masses known as spheroids within a specialized design and production center at the Biomedical Technology Park.
these spheroids are then implanted into the damaged eardrum alongside a dissolving membrane. As the membrane gradually breaks down, the cells multiply and develop into a new tissue layer that closely mimics the structure and function of a natural eardrum.
Rapid Recovery and Promising Early Results
Professor Valery Svistoshkin, Director of the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic at Sechenov University, highlighted the efficiency of the new procedure. “The operation takes only about 40 minutes,” he stated, “much less than traditional surgery.”
Early results have been exceptionally encouraging. One patient experienced complete healing of the tympanum within just three weeks,accompanied by a noticeable improvement in hearing. patients undergoing the surgery are reportedly experiencing a substantially improved recovery period.

This research is being conducted with the support of the “Priority-2030” programme, specifically within the “Youth and Children” project, demonstrating a national commitment to advancing medical innovation. Professor Pyotr Timashev, Scientific Supervisor of the Biomedical Park, emphasized the importance of the newly developed technical platform.
“These operations became possible thanks to the development of an innovative technical platform,” Timashev explained.
