Young Fan’s Darts Passion Ignited by Luke Littler During Recovery from Meningitis

A 10-year-old boy from Halesowen, Dudley, found inspiration and a newfound passion for darts while recovering from viral meningitis, crediting Luke Littler as his idol. The remarkable story highlights the power of sport to uplift and motivate during challenging times, and the unexpected benefits of the game beyond entertainment.

A Lifeline During Illness

The young fan, identified only as Josh, first encountered the now 18-year-old darts sensation while undergoing treatment for viral meningitis. He was absent from school for an extended period, coinciding with Littler’s rise to prominence. According to Josh’s mother, Lisa, “It just ignited something in Josh,” adding, “He [Littler] is his idol.”

The timing proved crucial. Lisa explained, “I think it was the fact that Josh was only 10 and Luke was 16 – he could really relate to him.” She noted that Josh was “just amazed someone so young could make such a difference and was famous on TV.”

Unexpected Educational Benefits

Beyond providing entertainment and inspiration, the family discovered an unexpected benefit to Josh’s newfound hobby: improved math skills. Lisa shared that calculating “checkouts” in darts helped develop his abilities in a subject she previously described as not his strongest.

A Family Affair and a Dream Realized

Josh’s enthusiasm for darts has transformed the family’s home, now boasting two dartboards – one in the living room and another in his bedroom. He regularly practices with his father, dedicating every spare moment to the sport.

The family’s dedication culminated in a memorable experience on Sunday, when they attended the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton and witnessed Littler secure victory, becoming the world number one for the first time. “I was really lucky that my mum and dad got me the tickets and I got to see Luke Littler win,” Josh said, describing it as “the best night of my life.” He expressed his eagerness to see Littler compete again and hopes to obtain an autographed shirt.

Future Aspirations

While Josh’s passion for darts is undeniable, his mother indicated that his future career path remains open, with football also being a strong contender. “You can just see the passion he’s got for it [darts]…he just loves it,” Lisa added, underscoring the profound impact Littler has had on her son’s life and well-being.
