Lakshya Sen, a semi-finalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, spearheaded the Indian advance. Ranked 14th in the world and seeded seventh in the tournament, Sen displayed dominant form, defeating Chinese Taipei’s Su Li-yang 21-17, 21-13 in a 43-minute match. This victory underscores Sen’s continued growth and potential as a leading force in men’s singles badminton.
Prannoy and Srikanth Secure Hard-Fought Wins
World championships bronze medalist H.S. Prannoy overcame a shaky start to triumph over Indonesia’s Yohanes Saut Marcellyno. After dropping the first game 6-21, Prannoy rallied to win 21-12, 21-17, demonstrating resilience and adaptability. Meanwhile, former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth, currently ranked 41st, staged an upset, defeating Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chia-hao 21-19, 19-21, 21-15 in a grueling match lasting over an hour. Srikanth’s win highlights his enduring competitive spirit and ability to perform under pressure.
Emerging Talents Make Their Mark
The Australian Open also saw impressive performances from rising stars Ayush Shetty and Tharun Mannepalli. Shetty, who secured India’s only BWF World Tour title this season with his US Open victory, continued his winning streak with a commanding 21-11, 21-15 victory over Canada’s Sam Yuan. He will next face Japanese ace Kodai Naraoka. Mannepalli also battled to a win, overcoming Denmark’s Magnus Johannesen 21-13, 17-21, 21-19 in a closely contested three-game encounter.
Setbacks and Remaining Challenges
Despite the overall success, India did experience some setbacks. Kiran George suffered a defeat at the hands of Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, who won 11-21, 24-22, 21-17. In mixed doubles, Mohit and Lakshita Jaglan were eliminated following a 21-12, 21-16 loss to Canada’s Nyl Yakura and Crystal Lai. This leaves Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty – known as “SatChi” – as India’s sole remaining hope in the doubles category. Having already won their opening match on Tuesday, SatChi will compete against Chinese Taipei’s Su Ching-heng and Wu Guan-Xun for a quarter-final berth. India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also exited the women’s doubles competition on Tuesday.
