Robot competition Sparks Debate: Is Exploiting Rules “Cheating” or genius strategy?
A decades-long Japanese tradition aimed at fostering innovation in vocational students has ignited a fierce online debate after the 2025 “High School Robot Competition” concluded with a controversial victory. The winning team, from Asahikawa Industrial High School, employed a strategy likened to “wash points” in video games – repeatedly exploiting a loophole in the rules to amass points – prompting accusations of unsportsmanlike conduct alongside praise for clever tactics.
The annual competition, designed for higher vocational students, challenges teams to build and program robots to complete a complex task. This year’s challenge, dubbed “Great High Gate,” required teams to construct an archway and then maneuver their robot, with a team member riding aboard, through the arch to earn points based on its height.
The final showdown pitted Asahikawa Industrial High School against Kumamoto National College of Technology. From the outset, the teams adopted drastically different approaches. While Kumamoto focused on building a single, impressively tall arch, Asahikawa opted for a smaller, more modest structure. This seemingly simple decision proved to be the key to their success.
According to the competition rules, points are awarded based on the height of the arch when a robot passes through it. Though, a crucial caveat stipulated that only five points would be awarded for subsequent passes through the same arch. Recognizing this,the asahikawa team strategically built a 210-centimeter arch and then relentlessly circled it,maximizing their points with repeated passes.
“They just kept going around and around,” one observer noted. “It was a very efficient way to rack up the score.”
Within two minutes of the match, Asahikawa had already accumulated 365 points, while Kumamoto had yet to successfully navigate their robot through their larger, still-under-construction arch. By the time Kumamoto finally completed their 420-centimeter arch and earned 420 points, Asahikawa had already reached 490. Even with the additional 50 points awarded for building the tallest arch, Kumamoto fell short of victory.
The final result quickly went viral, sparking a heated discussion among Japanese netizens.Manny criticized Asahikawa’s strategy as a “weak” and “uninspired” way to win. Critics argued that the team had prioritized exploiting a technicality over demonstrating genuine engineering prowess.
