Groundbreaking Korea-US Collaboration Targets New Treatments for Autoimmune Central Nervous System Diseases

A new joint research initiative between South Korean and leading US medical institutions promises a paradigm shift in understanding and treating debilitating autoimmune diseases affecting the brain and spinal cord. The project, selected for the ‘2025 Boston Korea Joint Research and Development Project,’ will receive $6 billion won (approximately $4.6 million USD) in funding over four years.

Rising Demand for International Research Partnerships

The National Cancer Center announced on November 20, 2025, that the research team led by Dr. Ho-jin Kim, from the Department of Neurology and the Department of Rare and Incurable Cancer Research, was chosen for this prestigious collaboration. This year’s selection process was highly competitive, with a success rate of 19.6 to 1 – a significant increase from the previous year’s 11.8 to 1 ratio. This surge in applications underscores the growing expectation for strengthened research cooperation between Korea and the United States.

Unlocking the Secrets of Glial Cells and Immune Interactions

The core of the research focuses on unraveling the complex interplay between glial cells and immune cells in central nervous system autoimmune diseases. Specifically, the team will investigate potential treatment targets for conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease characterized by inflammation of the myelin sheath protecting nerve cells.

Traditionally, research has centered on the direct immune response – focusing on elements like lymphocytes and antibodies. This new project, however, will spotlight the role of astrocytes, a crucial component of the nervous system, in regulating immune function. By examining the disease development process at a cellular level, researchers aim to identify and validate novel therapeutic interventions.

A New Approach to Treatment

“By identifying that astrocytes are not simply reactive cells but regulators that determine the direction of immune responses, we will present an approach that goes beyond the limitations of existing treatments,” stated Dr. Kim. “We hope that this research will lead to a fundamental understanding of central nervous system diseases and the development of next-generation treatment strategies.”

The collaborative effort will involve participation from Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, bringing together leading expertise from both nations. This international partnership is poised to accelerate the pace of discovery and translate research findings into tangible benefits for patients suffering from these challenging conditions.
