Understanding the Looming Cold: A Perfect Storm of Factors
The impending cold snap isn’t simply a typical winter chill. Several factors are converging to increase the likelihood of sustained, below-normal temperatures. A phenomenon known as a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) is at the heart of the concern. According to climatologist Judah Cohen, a research scientist at MIT, an SSW represents “the largest type of disruption that occurs to the polar vortex.”
Essentially, the polar vortex is a swirling mass of cold air high above the Arctic. When an SSW occurs, it weakens this vortex, allowing frigid air to escape its usual confines and plunge southward. However, the jet stream acts as a crucial gatekeeper, determining where and if that cold air actually reaches populated areas.
Adding to the complexity, a weak La Niña pattern in the Pacific Ocean is also influencing the jet stream, increasing the chances of Arctic air intrusions. Furthermore, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) – a moving pattern of thunderstorms in the tropics – is contributing to the shifting atmospheric dynamics. Combined, these elements are creating conditions ripe for an “increased cold air intrusion across the northern tier of the contiguous United States” over the coming weeks.
Thanksgiving Forecast: Cold, Dry, and Potentially Snowy
As of Wednesday, November 19, Michigan’s Thanksgiving forecast calls for dry but cold conditions, with temperatures ranging from 28 to 36 degrees. While a white Thanksgiving isn’t guaranteed, the potential for lake-effect snow is growing, particularly downwind of the Great Lakes. “Anticipated gusty winds combined with snowfall could support blowing snow and resulting decreased visibility, especially across parts of the Northern and Central Plains during the Thanksgiving travel period,” meteorologists warned.
Travel across the broader Midwest and Western US is expected to be significantly impacted by a separate storm system bringing heavy snow and cold rain. The Northeast will likely see mainly rain, but gusty winds associated with the Thanksgiving storm could still disrupt air travel and even impact events like the Macy’s Day Parade in New York City and the Dunkin’ Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia.
A Polar Vortex at a “Critical Juncture”
What’s particularly concerning to experts is the current state of the polar vortex. Charts currently show it is unusually weak – resembling its strength in early autumn – and is likely to send temperatures plummeting across the U.S. beginning early next week. This weakness is linked to declining zonal winds high above the Arctic, approaching 0 m/s, a threshold that can trigger a major SSW.
The atmosphere is at a “critical juncture,” Cohen stated, suggesting that November’s weather patterns could represent a “fork in the road” for the rest of the winter. If a significant SSW event occurs this month, it would be an “extraordinary, even unique event,” as it would be the first November SSW since accurate satellite records began. Prior to satellite data, only two such events were recorded, in November 1958 and 1968.
Lake-Effect Snow and Regional Impacts
The combination of cold air and relatively warm lake waters sets the stage for significant lake-effect snow, particularly in Michigan and surrounding areas. Westerly winds blowing across Lakes Michigan and Superior pick up moisture and warmth, which then condenses into localized snow showers when it reaches land. Northwesterly winds can enhance snow totals in northern and eastern Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula.
While the intensity of this particular cold outbreak remains uncertain – it’s unclear whether it will match the November 10 system that dumped up to 18 inches of snow in parts of the Upper Peninsula – the overall pattern suggests a transition to more winter-like conditions across the west-central and central U.S., with much below-normal temperatures and the potential for heavy snow. The Climate Prediction Center forecasts a colder pattern for the West and Northern Plains during Thanksgiving week, with milder air overspreading the East, followed by a broader shift to colder conditions across much of the central and northern U.S. into early December.
