UConn Women’s Basketball Faces Top-10 Test Against Michigan in Showcase Clash
UConn women’s basketball, currently ranked No. 1, prepares for its most significant challenge of the young season, facing No. 6 Michigan in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase on Friday evening. The highly anticipated matchup will take place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and broadcast live on FOX and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (FOX Sports 97.9).
UConn boasts an impressive 45-1 record all-time at Mohegan Sun Arena, demonstrating a consistent dominance on this particular court. Historically, the Huskies have also excelled in high-stakes contests, holding a 135-56 record in games where both teams are ranked within the top 10 of the Associated Press poll.
The Huskies enter the game with a perfect 4-0 record, fresh off a commanding 100-68 victory over Ohio State last Sunday. Sarah Strong, a sophomore, led the charge against the Buckeyes, delivering a stellar performance with 27 points, a career-high seven assists, and a well-rounded stat line of 13 rebounds, three blocks, and five steals. Graduate student Azzi benefit contributed 19 points, shooting efficiently at 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. UConn’s offensive flow was exceptional, evidenced by 30 assists on 39 made field goals.
Strong’s outstanding play was quickly recognized, earning her the BIG EAST Player of the Week award for the second consecutive week. Fellow teammate Blanca Quiñonez also received accolades, being named the conference’s Freshman of the Week on Monday.
This contest marks the first-ever meeting between UConn and Michigan. However, several Huskies have prior experience against the Wolverines, as transfers Kayleigh Heckel (from USC) and Surrender Williams (from Wisconsin) faced Michigan during their previous collegiate careers.
Michigan arrives at the Showcase with a 4-0 record of their own, having recently secured a decisive 120-50 win against Binghamton on Tuesday. The Wolverines’ offense is balanced, with Olivia Olson leading the team in scoring at 17.8 points per game. Notably, five Michigan players are currently averaging double-digit points, showcasing their offensive depth. Head coach Kim Barnes Arico is in her 14th season leading the Wolverines program.
Following the Friday night showdown with Michigan, the Huskies will continue their participation in the Showcase, facing Utah (3-1) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET. That game will be broadcast on FS1.
