Zoopunk Developer TiGames Defends Game Against AI-Generated Art Allegations

A new action game featuring a rabbit protagonist, Zoopunk, has become the center of a debate surrounding the use of generative AI in game development. TiGames, the Chinese studio behind the title, has issued a statement clarifying its approach to AI following concerns raised after the game was highlighted in an Nvidia announcement showcasing new NPC technology.

The controversy began after Zoopunk was featured prominently in an Nvidia presentation on March 14, 2024, demonstrating the potential of AI to enhance non-player character interactions and customization options. A video accompanying the announcement showed a developer using voice commands to alter the appearance of a spaceship, leading some to believe the entire game was created using AI tools.

However, TiGames swiftly responded, asserting that Zoopunk is the product of “human hard work.” According to a company release, generative AI is being utilized within the game, but its application is limited to user-generated content (UGC).

“All our works are original creations and the culmination of our artists’ hard work and dedication,” the statement read. “AI will only be used to assist players in producing user-generated content… such as vehicle skins, clothing color schemes, and similar items. In other words, AI serves as a tool to support players in secondary creations and in maintaining the mod community.”

Zoopunk represents a significant evolution for TiGames, serving as a fully 3D sequel to their critically acclaimed 2.5D Metroidvania, FIST: Forged In Shadow Torch from 2021. The new title once again stars Rayton the rabbit, reimagined as a gritty, weapon-wielding hero in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting. Developers have described the character as “Think: Rise of the Guardian’s Easter Bunny but with a trench coat and proper weaponry.”

The studio emphasized its commitment to expanding the world established in FIST, stating in a Steam announcement, “We spent a long time debating our next step… to breathe new life into the captivating universe of FIST.” TiGames also acknowledged the game is still under development and actively seeking player feedback. “Zoopunk is still in development, and far from perfect,” the developer added. “That is precisely why we want to share our world with you early – to listen, to learn, and to grow this universe together with the players who care about it.”
