Toledo Rockets Make Waves at West Virginia Invitational, Slegers Sets New Record

Toledo’s swimming and diving team delivered a strong performance on day two of the West Virginia Invitational in Morgantown, West Virginia, highlighted by a record-breaking swim from senior Janne Slegers. The Rockets currently sit in sixth place overall, poised to challenge Drexel for a top-five finish as the competition concludes Saturday.
Slegers Dominates 200 Freestyle, Breaks Career Best
Janne Slegers delivered a standout performance, winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.64. This not only secured her the top spot in the event but also established the seventh-fastest time in Toledo Rockets history, surpassing her previous personal best. “This is a testament to Janne’s dedication and hard work,” a team spokesperson commented.
Relay Teams Showcase Strength
The Rockets’ success extended beyond individual events. The 800 freestyle relay team, comprised of Helena Pinto Coelho Lopes, Janne Slegers, Tiana Temelkova, and Claire Kemmer, finished seventh with a time of 7:33.97, securing another top-10 finish for the team. The 200 medley relay team of Leah Evans, Grace Henely, Kenzie Robinson, and Helena Pinto Coelho Lopes placed 11th, clocking in at 1:44.90.
Multiple Top-15 Finishes Highlight Depth
Toledo demonstrated impressive depth with several additional top-15 finishes. Grace Henely secured 12th place in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.45), while the 800 freestyle relay team of Lindsay Bright, Kalyna Pyk, Clarke Doyle, and Sarah Poach finished 14th (7:51.97). Kenzie Robinson rounded out the strong showing with a 15th-place finish in the 100 fly (56.94).
Tight Competition, Rockets Within Striking Distance
After two days of competition, the team standings are closely contested. William & Mary leads with 1,245 points, followed closely by West Virginia (1,244 points). Toledo currently holds sixth place with 487 points, just under 100 points behind fifth-place Drexel (682.5 points).
What’s Ahead for the Rockets
Toledo will return to the pool on Saturday for the final day of the West Virginia Invitational, competing in the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 fly, and 400 freestyle relay. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., with the final events commencing at 6:00 p.m.
