Single Mother’s ‘Answer to Prayer’ Arrives on Four Wheels Amid Cancer Battle
A Jacksonville, Florida woman facing a Stage 3 ovarian cancer diagnosis received a life-altering gift Friday: a brand-new Hyundai Kona, provided by the Lone Warrior Foundation. The vehicle offers critical support as she navigates chemotherapy, upcoming surgery, and a deeply personal family loss.
The challenges facing Lakeisha Glaspie, diagnosed in February, were already immense. Six rounds of chemotherapy have taken a toll, and the recent breakdown of her 17-year-old car compounded the difficulties, hindering access to vital medical appointments and time with her son.
“I know between the surgery coming up and having no car and the challenges that come along with it, this is from all of us because we love you and this is what Lone Warrior is all about, to make a difference for people like you to help you along your journey because it’s hard enough to be a single mom, but it’s even harder to have cancer on top of it,” said Rob Chumbook, founder of the Lone Warrior Foundation.
Chumbook, a cancer survivor himself, understands the unique burdens faced by single parents battling life-threatening illnesses. He established the Lone Warrior Foundation to provide a network of community, hope, and financial support to those in need. The foundation doesn’t simply offer assistance; it aims to alleviate the overwhelming stress that accompanies a cancer diagnosis.
Remarkably, the Hyundai Kona wasn’t directly donated. It was the grand prize in a raffle held during the Lone Warrior Foundation’s gala, and the winning ticket holder generously chose to gift the vehicle to Glaspie.
“I hope it changes your life for the better. That is what we are all about. Save one life, change one life; that is what our motto is,” Chumbook stated.
Glaspie expressed profound gratitude, describing the car as “life-changing.” She emphasized the practical impact it will have on her ability to continue treatment and maintain crucial connections with her family. “I know I’ll make it to treatment…and of course, being able to get my son who was concerned we were going to miss visits,” she said.
The timing of the gift is particularly poignant. Glaspie’s mother is currently in hospice care, and the new vehicle will enable her to travel to New York to spend precious final moments with her.
“Lakeisha’s mom is at the end of the road, unfortunately. And they don’t know how long she’s going to live, and this car is going to allow her to drive to New York to see her mom before she passes,” Chumbook explained. “So, there’s a beautiful silver lining to this gift.”
For Glaspie, the unexpected generosity feels like divine intervention. “When you get a cancer diagnosis, it almost seems that everything that can go wrong will go wrong. And it’s been a challenge for me to just hang in there, to keep praying, to keep fighting, to reach out for help. A lot of people, myself included, just don’t want to reach out for help, but it’s so important to reach out for help because there are people wonderful people and organizations like the Lone Warrior Foundation just willing to help you,” she shared. “I know it was God answering some prayers.”
