Connor Hellebuyck Injury: Jets Goaltender to Undergo Knee Surgery
A meaningful blow to teh Winnipeg Jets and Team USA’s Olympic aspirations: star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will be sidelined for four to six weeks following arthroscopic knee surgery. The announcement, made Friday morning by Jets head coach Scott Arniel, throws the team’s goaltending situation into flux as they navigate a competitive central Division.
The decision to undergo surgery now, according to a team spokesperson, was made after careful consideration with Hellebuyck, the medical staff, and his agent.”It was just something that the timing is right,” the spokesperson stated. “Get it done now.We have a lot of schedule ahead of us.” The surgery, scheduled for Saturday, will prevent Hellebuyck from facing the Washington Capitals next week.
Hellebuyck’s absence is particularly impactful given his recent accolades. last season, the American backstop achieved the pinnacle of individual success, winning both the Hart Trophy as league MVP and the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender. His performance propelled the Jets to the Presidents’ Trophy, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record. This season, despite a current record of 8-6, Hellebuyck has maintained a strong performance with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage.
The Jets will now turn to Eric Comrie to shoulder the goaltending responsibilities. Comrie currently boasts a 4-1 record with a 2.60 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. To provide further depth,Winnipeg has recalled goaltender Thomas Milic from the Manitoba Moose to serve as Comrie’s backup.
Currently third in the Central Division with a 12-7-0 record, the Jets are looking to build on their current two-game winning streak when they face the Carolina Hurricanes Friday night. The team’s ability to remain competitive during Hellebuyck’s recovery will be a key test of their depth and resilience.
Hellebuyck is widely considered the frontrunner to start in net for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics. His recovery timeline will be closely monitored by both Jets fans and the American national team as they prepare for the international stage.
