Canberra Shooting: Man Found Dead After Standoff with Police
A 71-year-old man was found dead late Thursday night following a tense standoff with police in Isabella Plains, Canberra, after allegedly firing upon officers attempting his arrest. The incident began with a domestic violence call and escalated into a multi-hour situation involving tactical teams and negotiators.
Police responded to a residence on Galloway Street at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Thursday to execute an arrest warrant for the man related to serious family violence offences allegedly committed against his partner. According to authorities, the man’s partner is currently hospitalized receiving treatment for her injuries.
Upon arrival, the man allegedly discharged a firearm toward the responding officers. Police confirmed they returned fire, prompting the suspect to barricade himself inside a shed on the property and cease communication.
“The situation unfolded rapidly,” a senior official stated. “Officers were immediately met with resistance, necessitating a careful and considered response.”
To ensure public safety, nearby residents were evacuated and Galloway Street was immediately cordoned off. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) deployed its tactical response and bomb response teams, while specialist negotiators worked to establish contact with the man and de-escalate the situation.
After several hours, at approximately 11:50 p.m., police discovered the man deceased inside the shed. Authorities believe his death was the result of self-inflicted injuries. Importantly, no officers sustained any injuries during the incident.
The case has been handed over to the Coroner for further investigation, alongside reviews by ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigations division and AFP Professional Standards. This ensures a thorough and impartial examination of all aspects of the incident.
