Florida Deputy Killed During Eviction Attempt; Gunman Dies From Injuries
A Florida law enforcement officer was fatally shot and another injured while serving an eviction notice in Vero Beach on Friday, culminating in a confrontation that left the gunman dead after succumbing to his injuries on Saturday. The incident underscores the inherent risks faced by officers during routine calls and has deeply impacted the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Escalation During Routine Eviction
The tragic events unfolded as deputies and a locksmith were attempting to execute an eviction order at a residence near Vero Beach. Michael Halberstam, 37, opened fire on the group, striking two Indian River County deputies and the locksmith. Authorities returned fire, hitting Halberstam multiple times. He died from his injuries Saturday afternoon, according to a statement from the county’s sheriff’s department.
One of the deputies, Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, a 25-year veteran of the force, was killed in the shooting. Another deputy sustained a shoulder injury and is currently recovering. The locksmith underwent surgery and remains in critical condition at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, a hospital spokesperson confirmed on Friday. The locksmith’s identity has not been released.
History of Calls to the Residence
According to Indian river County Sheriff Eric Flowers, the sheriff’s office had received seven calls regarding the home in the month leading up to the shooting. “Almost all” of these calls originated from Halberstam’s mother, who was in the process of evicting her son. Despite the prior calls,Sheriff Flowers stated that deputies were not anticipating any trouble when thay arrived to carry out the eviction.
“This was a standard call for service,” the sheriff said, adding that there was no data in Halberstam’s background that would have indicated he was prohibited from possessing a weapon.
A Loss Felt Throughout the Department
The death of Deputy Sweeting-Mashkow has sent shockwaves through the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.Sheriff Flowers,visibly emotional,spoke of his long-standing professional relationship with the fallen officer. “I can tell you that our team will feel this forever,” he said.
In a moving tribute, Deputy Sweeting-Mashkow was posthumously promoted to sergeant by the sheriff’s office on Saturday.
