Riga Forum to Tackle Global Challenges, Empower Future Leaders Through education

A collaborative forum in Riga, Latvia, on November 26 and 27 will bring together educators, NGOs, and young people to address pressing global issues and explore funding opportunities for innovative solutions. Organized by the association “Latvijas Platforma tejštivės sadarvės” (LAPAS), the event aims to foster a more united and sustainable world through the power of global education.
Addressing Critical Issues Through Dialogue
The forum will feature presentations from six representatives of non-governmental organizations on Wednesday, November 26, focusing on key areas of concern.These include demographic challenges with Ingrīda Strazdiņa of association “Green Freedom”; demographic challenges with Ingrīda Pērkone, head of the association “Sievietēm 50+”; human rights with Daina Mita, senior researcher at the “Baltic Human Rights Society”; and the importance of global partnerships with Agnija Birule, deputy director of “Society for openness – Delna”.
LAPAS Roadmap for Transformative Global Education
In the afternoon, LAPAS will unveil its comprehensive global education roadmap, a practical tool designed to guide individuals and organizations in implementing impactful, transformative initiatives. According to a spokesperson for LAPAS, the roadmap “will help to plan and evaluate developments in the fields of global education and sustainable progress, encourage the search for solutions to current local and global challenges.” global education, as defined by LAPAS, encompasses a broad spectrum of approaches, from human rights and sustainable development to crucial media literacy skills.
The roadmap is structured around five key directions,each to be introduced by an “inspirational storyteller”:
- Awareness and Understanding: Dzintra Iliško,a professor at Daugavpils University,will lead the discussion on fostering a deeper understanding of the world and oneS role within it.
- Interaction and Cooperation: Anda Šarkovska, community project manager of the association “Latvijas lauku Forums,” will explore building effective local and global partnerships.
- Global Citizenship and Civic Participation: Oskars Mucenieks, a member of the council of “Latvijas Jaunatnes padode” society, will address the importance of active citizenship in tackling global challenges.
- Materials and Methods: Ilze Dalbiņa, head of the education sector of the Latvian National commission for UNESCO, will present innovative educational approaches.
- Core Values: Liene valdmane, general secretary of the association “European Movement in Latvia,” will discuss integrating core values of global education into organizational operations.
funding Opportunities and Project Collaboration
Thursday, November 27, will focus on practical support for participants, providing data on funding opportunities, including the third project competition hosted by LAPAS, and three additional financing programs. The event will also facilitate project partner networking, allowing attendees to connect and collaborate on future initiatives. Successful projects from this year will be showcased to inspire future applicants.

This forum is the centerpiece of LAPAS’s Global Education week, running from November 24 to 30. This year’s theme, “Building a just, peaceful and sustainable future,” emphasizes the power of co-unity, building on the momentum of Global Education Week in Europe, which took place from November 17 to 23.
