Diet & Lung Cancer Risk: High Glycemic Index Linked to Increased Incidence, Study Finds

A new study suggests a complex relationship between diet and lung cancer, finding that a high glycemic index (GI) diet is associated with a higher risk of the disease, while a high glycemic load (GL) diet may offer some protection. The research, analyzing data from over 100,000 adults, underscores the importance of dietary choices in cancer prevention.

Decades-Long Study Reveals Dietary Patterns

Researchers examined data from 101,732 adults participating in the U.S. National Cancer Institute’s Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial cohort. Participants completed detailed dietary questionnaires between 1993 and 2001 and were followed for approximately 12 years to monitor the development of lung cancer. This extensive longitudinal study allowed researchers to compare dietary patterns of those who ultimately developed lung cancer with those who did not, carefully accounting for confounding factors like smoking.

Glycemic Index: A Cause for Concern

The study revealed a significant correlation between diets high in glycemic index foods and an increased risk of lung cancer. Individuals consuming diets with the highest GI had a 13% higher overall chance of developing lung cancer compared to those with the lowest GI intake. This elevated risk extended to both major types of lung cancer: non–small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer.

Glycemic Load: A Potential Protective Factor

Interestingly, the findings regarding glycemic load presented a contrasting picture. Participants with the highest GL diets demonstrated a 28% lower risk of developing lung cancer overall, a pattern particularly evident in cases of non–small cell lung cancer. However, researchers noted no clear association between GL and the incidence of small cell lung cancer.

Implications for Cancer Prevention

These findings suggest that dietary modifications could play a role in lung cancer prevention. “Diets that contain fewer amounts of high glycemic index foods and higher amounts of high-quality carbohydrates, such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, may be linked to lower lung cancer risk,” researchers stated. This highlights the importance of prioritizing complex carbohydrates over simple sugars and refined grains.

The study, published in the Annals of Family Medicine, provides valuable insights into the complex interplay between diet and cancer risk. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the mechanisms underlying these associations and to develop targeted dietary recommendations for lung cancer prevention.
