China Leads the Way in Robotic Eldercare, Addressing a Growing Demographic Challenge
As China’s population rapidly ages, innovative solutions are emerging to address the increasing demands of eldercare. Driven by both policy initiatives and rising consumer need, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics into senior care is accelerating, offering a glimpse into a future where robotic companions and assistive devices are commonplace.
By the end of 2024, China’s population aged 60 and above reached 310 million, representing roughly 22 percent of the total population – a demographic shift fueling the demand for advanced care solutions. This surge in the elderly population is prompting a re-evaluation of traditional care models and a growing acceptance of technological interventions.
From Science Fiction to Reality: The Rise of Eldercare Robots
The concept of a dedicated eldercare robot for every senior citizen was once relegated to the realm of science fiction. However, that vision is rapidly approaching reality. Robots are increasingly being deployed in households and care facilities to assist with daily challenges and improve the quality of life for older adults.
In Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, a senior resident was photographed on March 3, 2025, playing chess with a robot – a symbolic representation of this evolving landscape. Beyond companionship, robots are providing tangible assistance. At a rehabilitation center in Beijing’s Fengtai District, a 76-year-old man, previously reliant on a caregiver, is now regaining his mobility with the aid of a robotic exoskeleton. “I used to need someone by my side,” he shared, “With the robot training, I can walk myself.”
These advancements extend to a range of functionalities, including AI-assisted moxibustion therapy and enhanced mobility support. “We place great emphasis on the application of technology in eldercare,” explained Li Xipo, director of a Shenzhen nursing home. “By integrating AI robots, rehabilitation robots, and robotic pets, we aim to improve seniors’ quality of life while creating a testing ground for industry innovation.”
Policy Support and Industry Expansion
The growth of China’s eldercare robot industry is not occurring in a vacuum. It is being actively fostered by supportive government policies and a proactive regulatory environment. New guidelines for elderly care service reforms are prioritizing the advancement of humanoid robots, brain-computer interfaces, and AI technologies.
Local governments are also playing a crucial role. Beijing’s three-year action plan on embodied intelligence encourages the pilot use of intelligent robots in eldercare institutions, while Jiangsu province’s innovation plan promotes the broader adoption of service robots in both homes and care facilities.
Notably, China took a leading role in the formulation of a global standard for elderly-care robots released earlier this year by the International Electrotechnical Commission. This standard establishes critical technical benchmarks for the design, manufacturing, testing, and certification of these devices.
“Since early last year, we’ve clearly seen demand for eldercare robots picking up,” stated Chen Yuxi, industry director of the service robot division at Siasun Robot & Automation Co., Ltd.
Addressing Unmet Needs and Emotional Wellbeing
The demand for eldercare robots extends beyond purely physical assistance. As the population ages, the need for technological solutions that provide emotional companionship is becoming increasingly prominent. “Elderly people who are disabled, cognitively impaired or of a very advanced age have certain requirements when it comes to toileting, bathing, eating, getting dressed and moving around both indoors and outdoors,” noted Sun Liguo, vice president of the Beijing association of senior citizens.
This holistic approach to eldercare recognizes the importance of addressing not only physical needs but also the emotional and social wellbeing of seniors. “Eldercare robots represent an untapped market,” asserted Bi Yalei, secretary-general of the Shenzhen Robots Association. “With pressing issues in senior care, such as mobility assistance, fall prevention, and rehabilitation support, many companies in Shenzhen are actively investing in this sector due to strong demand.”
Overcoming Barriers to Widespread Adoption
Despite the significant momentum, challenges remain before eldercare robots can be widely deployed. Cost is a major obstacle, with exoskeleton walking aids exceeding 10,000 yuan (approximately $1,411 USD) and bathing-assistance robots ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 yuan. These price points place them beyond the reach of many households.
Concerns about safety and acceptance also persist. “Robots are too cold and emotionless. I just can’t accept them,” expressed Qu Suling, a 66-year-old resident of Shenyang, voicing a common fear of potential malfunctions and the impersonal nature of robotic care.
Furthermore, the development of sophisticated algorithms and user experiences requires access to large volumes of real-world data – a resource currently in short supply. “We have limited opportunities to enter seniors’ homes or eldercare facilities,” explained Ji Junjie, an algorithm specialist at the Beijing Innovation Center of Humanoid Robotics.
Looking ahead, Zhang Yunquan, a researcher at the Institute of Computing Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized the need for breakthroughs in three key areas: core technologies, real-world scenario adaptation, and ecosystem building. Eldercare robots represent a critical opportunity for improving wellbeing, and continued innovation will be essential to realizing their full potential.
