Previously,residents of the Sangha region were forced to travel as far as 400 kilometers to receive treatment in Oyo or the capital.”The Sangha is saved, health-wise, as we had to go to Oyo and further, to Brazzaville,” explained Edith Délot, a local midwife. “And now that we have this jewel, I hope that the Sangha will no longer have health problems.” The hospital, constructed on a 5-hectare site, promises to dramatically improve access to care for a previously underserved population.
Affordability Concerns Loom Large
Despite the widespread relief at the hospital’s opening, concerns about the cost of care are already surfacing. Current consultation fees at general hospitals across Congo-Brazzaville average around 5,000 CFA francs (approximately $7.60 USD).Many residents are hoping for reduced rates at the new facility.
“For me, we can put the consultation at 3,000 CFA francs, to make things easier for everyone,” suggested one resident, speaking anonymously. Another individual echoed this sentiment, stating, “If elsewhere, the consultation is at 5,000 FCFA, it would be something good if we can put it at 3,000 FCFA or 4,000 FCFA with us, given the trips we are required to make.” The issue of affordability is particularly acute given the significant travel distances many patients will still need to cover to reach the hospital.

The timing of the hospital’s inauguration, four months before the presidential election, has raised eyebrows. President Nguesso’s increased visibility through public works projects could be interpreted as a pre-election strategy. The cost of construction for the Ouesso Hospital has not been publicly disclosed.
